Everything you need to know before your first constellation – from anywhere in the world
You have read about Family Constellation Therapy. Something in it has landed – a recognition, a pull, a sense that this might be the piece that has been missing. But you live in London, or Sydney, or Dubai. Or perhaps you simply cannot travel. And you are wondering: can this work be done online? Will it be as powerful?
The answer – one that continues to surprise even experienced practitioners – is yes. Wholeheartedly, yes.
Why Online Constellation Works
The most common concern about online constellation therapy is a reasonable one: the work feels so experiential, so embodied, so present – surely something is lost through a screen?
In practice, remarkably little is lost. This is because Family Constellation operates through what Hellinger called the knowing field – the invisible field of information that exists within a family system. This field is not physical. It is not limited by geography. A client in Manchester and a practitioner in New Delhi are, for the purposes of this work, in the same room.
Thousands of practitioners worldwide have now moved their constellation practices online – particularly since 2020 – and the consensus is consistent: the depth of insight, the emotional movement, and the lasting shifts clients experience are equally potent in an online format.
Individual vs Group Constellation: What's the Difference?
Individual (one-to-one) sessions: The practitioner works with you alone, using representatives (figures, floor markers, or visualisation) to map your family system. These sessions are deeply personal and confidential, and are ideal for those who prefer privacy or are new to the work.
Group constellations: Conducted with a small group, where other participants serve as representatives for members of your family system. Group constellations carry a particular aliveness and spontaneity – the representatives often experience sensations and emotions that illuminate the family field in real time. Online groups work beautifully via video call, with participants in different countries.
Both formats are powerful. Your practitioner will help you determine which is most appropriate for your situation.
What Issues Can Online Constellation Address?
Family Constellation is not a niche modality – it is a broad systemic approach that addresses the full spectrum of human experience. International clients commonly bring:
Recurring relationship patterns – attracting unavailable partners, fear of commitment, repeated heartbreak
Career blocks and self-sabotage – inexplicable resistance to success, financial patterns that repeat across generations
Family estrangement and reconciliation – healing fractured family relationships, finding peace with difficult parents
Chronic illness and unexplained symptoms – exploring the systemic roots of physical conditions
Grief and loss – honouring deaths, miscarriages, and separations that were never fully mourned
Anxiety and depression – especially where the emotional weight feels disproportionate to personal history
Migration and cultural identity – a particularly rich area for international clients navigating between two or more worlds
How to Prepare for Your First Online Session
A little preparation goes a long way in deepening the experience of your constellation session. Here is what to do before you begin:
- Create a private, quiet space. You want to be able to speak freely and, if emotions arise (they often do), to feel held. Close the door. Put your phone on silent. Let those you live with know you need an hour undisturbed.
- Have a clear intention. You do not need a perfectly articulated question – but having a sense of what you are bringing to the session is helpful. ‘I want to understand why I keep repeating this pattern in relationships’ or ‘I want to explore my relationship with my mother’ are both excellent starting points.
- Gather basic family information. Your practitioner may ask about significant events in your family history – deaths, estrangements, traumas, migrations, secrets. You do not need to know everything. Even fragments are useful.
- Come with openness, not expectations. The constellation often goes in unexpected directions. The issue you come in with is not always the issue that most needs attention. Trust the process.
- Plan to rest afterward. Constellation work moves deep material. Give yourself the gift of a quiet evening. Journal if it helps. Be gentle with yourself.
What to Expect After Your Session
Constellation shifts often unfold over days, weeks, even months following a session. Do not judge the work by what you feel in the immediate aftermath — the field continues to move after the session ends. Many clients report that the most significant realisations arrive in the days following, sometimes in dreams, sometimes in unexpected moments of clarity.
It is also normal to feel temporarily more emotional or sensitive after a session. This is not a sign that something went wrong — it is a sign that something moved.
Wherever you are in the world, this work can reach you. The family field has no borders. And neither does the possibility of healing.
